UNICEF - Learning & Development
(Sustainability Skills Training)
Private and Public partnerships for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
- THE PROBLEM
Indonesia is one of the world’s most natural disaster-prone areas and is at risk of multiple hazards and constantly looking for solutions. In 2019, the UNICEF DRR Indonesia wanted to approach this matter in a new light. UNICEF supports child-centered disaster risk reduction (DRR) across Europe and Central Asia to prevent or mitigate humanitarian emergencies by reducing the impact of natural hazards from escalating into an emergency.
- THE SOLUTION
SL2 organised a hackathon that brought in key players in the private sector to make a difference with their resources and network. Previously a discussion limited to the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), UN agencies, non-governmental organisations and the local government, the hackathon expanded the potential and opportunities offered by a public-private partnership.
- OUR ROLE
The hackathon facilitated active engagement between stakeholders and companies on how to provide direct support to improve the resilience of local communities in disaster-prone areas. Bringing the private sector into the conversation expanded the network and opportunities for a faster response compared to specific DRR agencies. This increased the efficiency and opened up a pool of resources that were previously inaccessible, enhancing DRR mitigative measures.
